Venezuela's Chavez names brother education minister
Saturday, January 6, 2007
CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters): Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Friday named his older brother as education minister, reaffirming his family's role in public life and continuing a cabinet reshuffle that strengthens his grip on government.
Chavez this week also named a new vice president, finance minister and interior minister as part of an effort to catalyze his self-styled socialist revolution in the wake of a landslide reelection last month.
Adan Chavez, who has served as presidential chief of staff and ambassador to key ally Cuba, told reporters he would replace Education Minister Aristobulo Isturiz in the coming days.
Chavez's father, also named Hugo, is governor of Barinas, the president's cattle-ranching home state.
Asdrubal Chavez, a cousin of the president, is a director of state oil company PDVSA, which provides discounted oil to Cuba - a lynchpin of government policy.
