Gunshots interrupt Jamaica football league gameThursday, January 4, 2007by Gary Smith KINGSTON, Jamaica: A Jamaica Wray and Nephew Premier League game was forced to be abandoned after the sound of gunshots close to the Collie Smith Drive area had players, officials and spectators taking cover Wednesday evening. With only two-minutes gone in the second half, in a match between Boys Town and the visiting Reno, patrons were sent rushing for cover as gunshots echoed from areas just outside the stadium. Players and officials on the field, in a panic, went flat to the turf. After the sounds had ceased, referee Kevin Thomas called the game to an end, after consulting with the match commissary, Andrea Payne. Caribbean Net News also understood that the medical staff at the match scampered away from the complex. Reno's head coach, Wendell Downswell, said it was the first time he had been in such an environment. "It was the first time I had experienced something of this nature," he said, adding that the incident might somewhat restrain the nature of the league in certain areas. In other matches on the day, Waterhouse hammered hapless Naggoes Head 4-0 at Ferdie Neita Park, Tivoli Gardens edged Arnett Gardens 1-0 at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, while Village United and Portmore United played to a goalless draw at post time at the Elleston Wakeland Centre. Harbour View were scheduled to host Seba United in a late 7pm kickoff., while the match between Wadadah and August Town was postponed because of the unavailability of Jarrett Park.
