US Virgin Islands honour President FordMonday, January 1, 2007by Susan Mann ST JOHN, USVI: Flags were being flown at half mast Sunday at the US Virgin Islands Legislative Building in downtown Charlotte Amalie, in recognition of the passing of President Gerald Ford on Tuesday.
The 93-year-old former president took office in 1974, following the resignation of Richard Nixon, who left office rather than face impeachment due to his role in what would go down in American history as "the Watergate Scandal." The late president's coffin was flown to Washington, DC, from his home in California to lie in state in the US Capitol on Monday. President Ford's state funeral will be held Tuesday at the National Cathedral. A national day of mourning will also be observed on that day.
