Sunday, December 24, 2006

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): UN forces and Haitian police launched a joint operation in a shantytown in Haiti's capital early Friday, and at least a dozen people were killed and several others were wounded in clashes, sources said.

A spokeswoman for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, Sophie Boutaud de la Combe, told AFP that a major operation was launched at 4:30 am in the Cite Soleil shantytown. She declined to specify a toll, but eyewitnesses said several victims were taken to the hospital.

Later in the morning, shots could still be heard coming from the neighborhood, as UN helicopters flew overhead.

A UN vehicle was also burned, a UN official said.
