Merry Christmas!

Friday, December 22, 2006

by Anthony L. Hall

This time last year, despite my apostasy, I joined the chorus of those remonstrating against the politically-correct scrooges who were trying to eXcise all references to “Christ” in Christmas holiday greetings.  Unfortunately, our defiant refrain - “Jesus is the reason for the season” - did not resonate amongst Christian revelers as we anticipated.  Because even the most devout Holy Rollers seemed perfectly content to spread the cheer of “Merry Xmas” - as they indulged in all of the (commercial) trappings of Christmas.

But, thank God, this year, I can shout “Haaaaallelujah! Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!

Because Christian avengers in American have forced the world’s biggest and most influential peddler of Christmas wares, Wal-Mart, to see the light - albeit by threatening to organize mass boycotts of their stores.  As a result, even before I could marshal my spirits for another “Merry Christmas” campaign, Wal-Mart announced that, henceforth, all of its holiday greetings will include “Christ” in Christmas!   And, sure enough, it wasn’t long before other retailers were sharing testimonials about their conversion to (Christ)mas sales.

"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can't serve both God and Mammon" [Matthew 6:24]

Alas, I have no doubt that - just as onward Christian soldiers from the Caribbean marched blithely into Wal-Mart last year to worship Mammon in the name of Xmas - they will do the same this year in the spirit of Christmas.  But, if it takes Wal-Mart to remind even those who call Him Lord and Saviour that Jesus is the reason for the season, then to God be the glory….

That said, to all of our loyal readers around the world, and to the dedicated editor and staff of Caribbean Net News:

Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa and, indeed, MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
