LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Why did Sir John Compton not explain the role of Chiquita and US influence in the decline of Caribbean banana industry?

Wednesday, December 20, 2006

Dear Sir:

If it is true that St Lucians voted in Sir John Compton's UWP as the new government in the just recently contested general election, with the hope of reviving the banana industry, the majority of voters will end up like April fools.

Caribbean governments and farmers don’t have any control of the banana industry. As a matter of fact they don’t even own the industry, even though the bananas are planted on Caribbean soil.

Unfortunately, only the people, who don’t understand international trade and the Western capitalist system of mass production with cheap labour, will believe that Compton can turn the tide and revive the banana industry.

John Compton's election campaign strategy to retain politcal power is very common among Caribbean politicians, who know clearly well that they are not telling citizens the truth about global issues that affect our people.

It does not really matter what brand of politics the opposition parties in the region preach. They will try to gain political mileage on issues that the ordinary citizens don’t understand.

For example, Sir John Compton can convince his supporters within the farming population to plant bananas on a very large scale, but it will be very interesting to see who will be the buyers of that product.

Just recently there was a similar discussion on "Spice Islander Talk Shop" a Grenadian internet forum, about the same issue of reviving the banana industry. Most contributors to the debate are anti-NNP government supporters, who live in North America. Some of them are highly-educated Grenadians who never experienced a single day of working on a banana plantation. But due to their political bias against the present Keith Mitchell regime, they accuse the NNP of being an anti agricultural government.

Sir John Compton and his UWP used the same political tactics to convince the majority of voters that Kenny Anthony’s SLP government is responsible for the declining banana industry. If Sir Compton allegation is true, therefore all CARICOM banana producing countries' governments and leadership are anti agriculture, except Sir John Compton's UWP.

Whenever a political leader and his/her political organization choose to fool their followers by telling them a bunch of political lies, in the long run it will backfire on them.

One of the problems that cause so much crime within Caribbean society is ignorance. As long as our politicians continue to feed their followers with ignorance in this global economy, crime will become a major factor.

Yet still, Sir John Compton vows to get rid of St Lucia's high crime rate of murder and sexual assaults, such as rape, which involves child molestation. Personally, I think Sir John Compton politically rapes the majority of St Lucian voters' minds, by convincing them to vote him back into office as the prime minister, to revive the banana industry.

The question is: why didn’t Sir John Compton explain to his followers the role of Chiquita and the US influence in the decline of Caribbean banana industry?

So sad and unfair, the old man did not do such an honest thing. Unfortunately, he tricks them into becoming April fools. While he - Sir John Compton - as the winner takes it all.
