Compton sworn in as new prime minister of St LuciaSaturday, December 16, 2006by Anselma Aimable CASTRIES, St Lucia: Sir John Compton was sworn in Friday as the next prime minister of St Lucia, for the fifth time. The swearing in ceremony was held at the official residence of Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy.
Sir John in turn thanked the people of St Lucia and emphasised that they should not dwell on the triumph but now is the time for healing and reconciliation. In his speech, Sir John once again articulated the plans and projects in the United Workers Party manifesto. Boards and Statutory Bodies will be formed and over 7,000 new jobs will be created, particularly in the tourism industry and information technology. There will be zero tolerance to crime, the police will be given a free hand and there will be no political interference with the work of the police. An Independent Police Complaints Commission will also be established. Emphasis was placed on bringing all the banana companies together to form one entity. Teachers, nurses and civil servants will be awarded study leave with pay, and the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College will become a full-fledged university in the next 3 years. Sir John made it quite clear that not every elected member will be given a ministerial position and the new ministers will be sworn in on Tuesday. Finally, Sir John undertook to do all in his power to fulfill the promises contained in the United Workers Party manifesto come the next fiscal year 2007 - 2008.
