CXC to discontinue Basic Proficiency Examination by 2010

Thursday, December 14, 2006

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: The year 2009 will be last time regional students will get the opportunity sit the Basic Proficiency Examinations (BPE) offered by the Council for the Caribbean Secondary Certificate (CSEC).

On Wednesday, the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) issued an advisory indicating that it will be discontinuing the CSEC.

CXC’s release states that English A and Social Studies BPE would be offered until May/June of 2008, while BPE in Mathematics will be offered until May/June of 2009.

The council stated that its decision to discontine the BPE was taken because of the patterns of low and declining demand for the subjects offered.

The CXC stated that, by 2010, all CSEC Examinations will be conducted at the General Technical Proficiency level.
