12-09-2006

NEW YORK, USA (AFP): Jose Uribe, who played 10 seasons in Major League Baseball, died Friday in a road accident in his native Dominican Republic, MLB.com reported.

According to the baseball website, 47-year-old Uribe was driving on the Nizao-San Cristobal Highway when he crashed around 3:00 a.m. The cause of the accident still is under police investigation.

Uribe, the father of current Chicago White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe, spent most of his major league career with San Francisco, playing for the Giants from 1985-92 and helping the team to reach the World Series in 1989.

"I was very saddened to hear the news of Jose's passing this morning," current Giants president Peter Magowan said in a statement. "He meant so much to the Giants during his playing days. He was such an important part of the team's success in the late 1980s. When you saw Jose on the field, he exuded happiness and pure joy for the game and life."
