LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Simply another feminist wannabe

Friday, December 8, 2006

Dear Sir:

Ms Betty appears to be under the illusion that her qualifications to address issues of friendship, dating, sex and marriage is simply the fact that she has lived.

Her ignorant, arrogant and condescending approach smacks of yet another white (or should I say whiteness) woman who is simply another feminist wannabe.

Perhaps her straight talk would be more useful when framed within the context of the instituionalization of sexism and how issues of marriage and sex are addressed. To suggest that women should dress "sexy" at cocktail parties; demonstrates her ignorance of religions and cultures who may well kill a woman who does such things.

Sexism is very real and can cause enormous harm to women both emotionally and physically.  Her feeble attempts to advise women on how to find "Mr Right" is silly and insults all woman who struggle under the oppression of sexism and the men who are sexist.

Her comments are silly, ignorant and sexist; and makes her "beauty and brains" comment show how ignorant she is about the world that many women live in.

I have no knowledge of Ms Betty's world and quite frankly do not care.  Grow up Ms Betty and stop giving "whiteness" advice on topics of which you have no knowledge of.

Betty Wills responds: Sorry, but I never viewed sex as a struggle, unless he was just being uncooperative!  Sounds like Linda from Portland may need some to knock the edge off, cuz she sounds really angry.   Well, at least she read the column, and hopefully will keep reading it.  It may help her get past her anger.  But, ya gotta love freedom of speech!   Actually, I'm not all that white!  I've got a great tan going from living on Bonaire, and it's hard to tell me apart from some of my lighter-skinned Antillean sisters.  How silly it sounds when she says there are cultures who would kill a women for dressing sexy at a cocktail party.  Does she really believe women in such cultures would even attend a cocktail party?  Forget the cleavage!
