CASTRIES, St Lucia: The political campaign in St Lucia is heating up as the election date draws nearer. Amidst all the campaign hype, the Chief Elections Officer says the electoral office will be closed until after the election to allow election officials to continue a smooth and final preparation for the December 11 poll. The office will reopen after election day.
Police and Fire Personnel will be casting their votes on Friday 8th December 2006, hence all emergency and security systems will be at full force come general polling day. A CARICOM delegation and OAS observer team are on island to monitor the election process. This is the first time that election observers will be monitoring St Lucias' general election.
The twelve-man OAS team is headed by Ambassador Christopher Thomas and the Deputy Chief Electoral Observer Mission is Steven Griner, Senior OAS Specialist. The OAS observer team is guaranteed access to the polling stations and they are also allowed to witness the tabulation of the votes. Steven Griner says he does not anticipate fraud, violence, abuse or any form of intimidation. He also articulated that, Saint Lucia being the democratic state it is, true democracy will prevail fairly.
