Another court victory for Grenada MP in citizenship case

Thursday, December 7, 2006

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: Parliamentary Representative for the Town of St George in Grenada and his legal team have won their fourth legal victory in defending an action claiming that MP Peter David's dual citizenship disqualifies him from standing for election.

After a hearing in Grenada on Tuesday, the Court of Appeal awarded $5,000 in costs to MP Peter David, saying that that there was no case.

Heading the legal team representing David is Dr Francis Alexis, who indicated that the ruling was as a result of the government's legal representative Hugh Wildman’s failure to follow procedures as laid down in the Civil Procedure rules.

According to Dr Alexis ,this clearly shows the other side's failure to read the laws that govern the land.

However, David's legal team is concerned about the amount of money being spent on this case. With the court awarding $5,000 to David, this brings the total amount to paid to him to $18,000.

The attorneys indicated that taxpayers will have to pay the price and this should not be the case.

At the same time, the St George representative said the authorties should have some sanity and bring closure to this issue.

David further outlined that he will continue to represent the people. He said the people spoke at the last general election in 2003 and he is sure that they will speak again.
