Jamaican Campbell to sit out 2007 indoor seasonWednesday, December 6, 2006by Gary Smith OKLAHOMA, USA: Caribbean Net News has learned that 2004 Athens Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell of Jamaica will not compete in the 2007 indoor season. Campbell was forced to sit out a majority of the last outdoor season because of a leg injury and, according to her managing staff, it was a move to see to it that she recovers to the fullest. The 2005 World Championships silver medallist from Helsinki in the 100m sustained an injury to her quadricep at the Gateshead British Grand Prix in early June and had to use the bulk of the season to go through rehabilitations. Last season, the new Caribbean sprint queen clocked 7.04 seconds to match the third fastest time in the 60-metres behind Americans Me'Lisa Barber and World 100m champion Lauryn Williams, who both clocked 7.01secs to take 1-2 at the World Indoors in Moscow, Russia. She also ran 22.84sec to finish as the seventh best performer on the indoor circuit. She is the fifth best performer of all-time over the 200m behind the likes of former Jamaican sprint queen Merlene Ottey and Russian legend Irina Privalova. Campbell is expected to be a hand full when the outdoor season starts and her main focus will definitely be on the winning a gold or two in the sprints at the 2007 World Championships, which will be hosted in Osaka, Japan from 25 August to 2 September.
