Guadeloupe open Group H with late win
11-25-2006
GCC BOURDA, Guyana: Former French international and Marseilles superstar Angloma came on as substitute and emerged as the hero for Guadeloupe in the opening Group H game of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Guyana.
Guadeloupe went into the game as favourites, having won their opening first round Group convincingly. Dominican Republic as runners up from their opening Digicel Caribbean Cup group held in USVI intended to show the French West Indies side that they would not be here to simply make up the numbers.
With both sides not wishing to give much away, neither side took control of the first half, which ended up being more of a tactical stalemate than a football game.
In fact the large crowd of up to 4,000 had to wait until the last 5 minutes of the first half before we saw any real action.
When it did come it was spectacular in its execution but, unfortunately for Guadeloupe, did not result in an opening goal.
After some great work by Eric Mocka, his cross was met perfectly by Hanany with a forceful header from 6 yards out. Much to the Guadeloupe side’s disbelief, and indeed the crowd's, Miguel Lloyd in the Dominican goal pulled off a spectacular one handed save pushing the ball to safety over the crossbar.
What the first half lacked in creation the second half made up for with the introduction of former French International and French league one winner Jocelyn Angloma on 58 minutes.
From this point on there was only ever going to be one winner with Angloma directing traffic from the front.
The Dominican Republic to their credit were determined to hold out and, in keeper Lloyd, they had a saviour who was suggesting that it might be possible for the lower ranked Dominican side to hold out for a draw.
The experience of veteran Angloma was simply too much for them in the end, however, as on 85 minutes the deadlock was finally broken. Dominique Mocka worked his magic on the left wing turning the full back one way and then the next before finally pulling the ball back for supersub Angloma.
The former Marseilles defender needed no bigger invitation and he side-stepped his marker to meet Mocka’s pull back and slot the opener into the bottom right of the Dominican Republic goal, past the helpless Lloyd.
Three minutes later, on 88 minutes, Angloma returned the favour to strike partner Mocka. Having seen off the challenge of Flavio Tavreas in the Dominican Republic defense, Angloma set up Dominique Mocka who made no mistake from 6 yards, drilling the ball into the bottom right of Lloyd’s goal to make it 2-0 to Guadeloupe.
As we entered injury time it seemed that the growing crowd would have to settle for the two late goals but in the first minute of injury time at the end of the game Angloma came once again to Guadeloupe’s cause when he again proved the difference.
On this occasion he set up right full back Frederic Phaan, who had continued his long run from defence to link up with Angloma, who created the perfect opportunity with a defence-splitting through ball.
3-0 it ended and Guadeloupe had only veteran star Angloma to thank for their decisive Group H opening win in the Digicel Caribbean Cup.
