Draw with Bermuda enough to see Barbados through to finals
Saturday, November 25, 2006
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: The final Group G match of the Digicel Caribbean Cup, which was staged at the National Stadium in Bridgetown, Barbados, ended with a 1-1 draw between Barbados and Bermuda. The hosts, having won both of their previous matches against Bahamas and St Vincent & The Grenadines, topped the group and secured their place in the finals.
Despite the honours being even at the end of the ninety minutes, the match was not without incident. Both sides had barely touched the ball when the Bermudan keeper Timothy Figuredio was shown an instant red card for handling the ball outside of the box. Barbados wasted no time in capitalising on this as only one minute later, Paul Ifill converted a free kick to put his side one up much to the delight of the home crowd.
The tempo of the match settled down with Bermuda retaining the larger share of the possession. Bermuda won much of the ball in mid field and their ability to drive forward deep into the Barbados defence ensured that the Bajan team had limited time to exploit the change of keeper at the other end. While shots at goal by both teams punctuated the remainder of the half, Bermuda was finally able to equalize in the 42nd minute courtesy of a sharp finish by John Barry Nusum.
In the second half Barbados were not without chances of their own but remained unable to penetrate the Bermudan defence. The visitors again looked the stronger side as they fought to win the points necessary to secure the second position spot in the group. However, that was not to be and the match ended in a draw.
Bermuda will now join Haiti and the yet to be determined third-placed team from the Group H matches in Georgetown Guyana in a play off round for the last position at the finals. Barbados join Cuba, Martinique and St Vincent & The Grenadines, who have also qualified in the finals which will take place in Trinidad in January next year.
