11-24-2006

ROAD TOWN, BVI: On behalf of the Government and people of the British Virgin Islands, Acting Chief Minister Ronnie Skelton has congratulated Governor-elect of the US Virgin Islands John deJongh and running mate Gregory Francis on their recent victory at the polls.

In a congratulatory letter to deJongh, dated 22 November, the acting Chief Minister gave his assurance of the continued support of the BVI Government as deJongh assumes the responsibility of Governor in January.

“Our Territories share a rich and common heritage politically, culturally, and economically and the BVI therefore looks forward to the continued good working relationship that we have established over the years,” Skelton stated in his letter.

Skelton also said he is hopeful that the BVI and USVI can find opportunities which can be mutually beneficial, especially through the Inter-Virgin Islands Council (IVIC).

“I look forward to meeting you at our next scheduled IVIC meeting at which time I can offer my personal congratulations to you and Mr. Francis,” wrote the acting Chief Minister, while commending the Governor Elect for running a “clean and pointed” election campaign.

DeJongh succeeds Dr Charles Turnbull as USVI Governor.
