When all the votes from the regular, general election held earlier this month were counted, DeJongh missed the mark by just two votes. Those votes would have yielded the "50 percent plus one vote" as required by USVI law for a straight forward win.

Thus, a Runoff Election between John DeJongh and Independent Party candidate Kenneth Mapp was held on Tuesday, November 21. Governor-Elect DeJongh received 57.30 percent or 16,644 votes, with Mapp receiving 47.70 percent or 42.70 percent of the votes cast.

Neither DeJongh or Mapp had issued a statement at the time of this writing.
