Cuban dissident seeks US asylum at Guantanamo
Wednesday, November 22, 2006
HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): Cuban dissident Camilo Cairo Falcon was picked up by the US Coast Guard while fleeing the island on a raft and taken to the US base in Guantanamo Bay, where he requested political asylum, dissident sources said.
"His family told me he jumped into a raft and was arrested and taken to the military base. He's asking for asylum from there," said Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN) president Elizardo Sanchez.
Falcon was arrested for demonstrating against the Cuban government in July 2005 and was released recently from jail for health reasons, a CCDHRN statement said.
He and two fellow demonstrators still face trial in Cuba on charges of public disorder.
The US base at Guantanamo, in western Cuba, houses an anti-terrorism prison where some 430 suspects are being held.
