Netherlands Antilles parliament approves tax treaty with US
Tuesday, November 21, 2006
WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao: The Tax Information and Exchange Agreement (TEIA) between the Netherlands Antilles and the Unites States of America will soon come into force. On Thursday, 16 November 2006 the Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles passed a series of changes in the national tax legislation that were necessary for the TEIA with the USA to come into force.
The State Secretary of Finance, Alex Rosaria, who defended the tax amendment in the Parliament, was very satisfied with the results. “We made important steps forward in our efforts to strengthen our international financial sector and will continue to work with others to crack down on tax evasion, money laundering and terror financing,” according to Rosaria.
Rosaria confirmed also that very soon he will entertain talks with US authorities about a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA). “I am very optimistic that we can agree to begin negotiations with the USA,” declared the State Secretary.
Rosaria, who has recently been appointed President of the Netherlands Antilles Task in charge of negotiating DTAs, said that besides the current negotiations with Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago, the Netherlands Antilles is getting ready to receive a delegation from the Nordic Countries in February 2007 to discuss the possibilities of bilateral DTAs.
