Premier of Nevis Joseph Parry and new US Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean Mrs Mary Martin Ourisman

Following the visit, Premier Parry said while in conservation with the Ambassador, she described Nevis as being a part of paradise, and in his view, Nevisians had good reason to be proud of that.

He said his Administration looked forward to working with Ambassador Ourisman during her tenure in the Caribbean over the next few years.

The US Ambassador’s visit to St Kitts and Nevis was her first official trip outside of Barbados since she arrived in the Caribbean recently, following her appointment to the position on October 31, 2006. She was scheduled to leave the Federation on Thursday for a one-day visit to Antigua before returning to Barbados.

During a brief interview with the Government Information Service (GIS), Ambassador Ourisman acknowledged that she had visited Nevis on previous occasions but was pleased to be back in an official capacity.

She described Nevis as charming and delightful. Following a tour of the Hamilton Museum, the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton on Low Street in Charlestown she referred to her first visit there as a special moment.

“This is particularly a special occasion for me to see a former American statesman and where he was born. Someone that helped write our Constitution and gave us our democracy knowing that he came from such a beautiful place; that he was grounded here and he learned his values here on this beautiful island,” she said.

The US Ambassador also paid courtesy calls on Deputy Governor General Eustace John  and Leader of the Opposition in the Federal Parliament Malcolm Guishard during her half day visit.

Ambassador Ourisman said she would return to Nevis in the future to meet with the Peace Corps Volunteers and US residents on the island.
