Trinidad and Tobago telecoms company pushes ahead with IP-based upgrade
Friday, November 17, 2006
PETALUMA, USA: Calix announced on Wednesday that Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) has selected solutions from Calix to upgrade access lines spread over 125 locations on two islands.
TSTT, which has over 350,000 wireline and one million wireless customers and is jointly owned by the government of Trinidad and Tobago and Cable & Wireless, is one of the largest service providers in the Caribbean.
TSTT is upgrading its infrastructure by pushing fiber deeper into the access network, offering very-high-speed DSL services to its residential subscriber base, and converting all voice services to VOIP. The upgrade will enable TSTT to offer a rich set of information, communication, and entertainment services while also addressing the demanding needs of a growing business and tourism base.
According to Trevor Deane, Vice President Technology with TSTT, “Calix offers us everything we need to implement a complete and major network upgrade and puts us in a position to offer services rivaling those found in major metropolitan areas throughout the Americas. The massive capacity and architectural flexibility of the Calix access portfolio also establishes a strong foundation on which we can grow for years to come.”
TSTT will accomplish the upgrade with an advanced, IP-based access network. The new network, which is already being deployed, not only allows TSTT to effectively address business and residential subscriber demands, it also enables TSTT to begin selectively deploying fiber to the premises, fiber to the node, and IPTV technologies.
“The importance of TSTT far outweighs its size,” said Mark Dressler, Calix director of sales for the region. “As a recognised technology leader in the Caribbean and beyond, TSTT has consistently demonstrated a knack for staying at the leading edge of technology. The upgrade to a Calix-based ultra-broadband access network means that TSTT will be able to offer the most advanced telecommunication services for residential, business, and tourism customers.”
Critical to the network upgrade is the Calix Management System (CMS), an advanced management and provisioning platform that positions TSTT to more easily offer IPTV services and more effectively leverage IP Multimedia Subsystem applications as they arise. CMS also gives TSTT a superior troubleshooting and fault-correction tool, enabling it to provide subscribers with very high service availability.
