ST JOHN, USVI: University of the Virgin Islands Editor and Professor Marvin E. Williams is currently seeking submissions for inclusion in the 21st Volume of the annual publication, Caribbean Writer.

The international anthology, published each summer, features work from the Caribbean and abroad, including artists and writers from the Virgin Islands.

The focus of submissions is Caribbean life, and should reflect heritage, perspective or experience. Previously unpublished poetry, short stories, personal essays and one-act plays are being sought.

All submissions will be eligible for the following prizes; the Canute A. Brodhurst Prize for best short story, the Daily News Prize for best poetry, the David Hough Literary Prize to a Caribbean author;  the Marguerite Cobb-McKay Prize to a Virgin Island author and the Charlotte and Isador Paiewonsky Prize for first time publication in the Caribbean Writer anthology.

"It is not easy to keep these types of publications alive", Professor Williams commented. Its longivity "demonstrates that the Caribbean Writer is indeed performing its mission."

Williams also indicated there is a continued need for an outlet for Caribbean writers and literature about the Caribbean.

A poem by Kwame Dawes, "Inheritance", selected for the inclusion in the 2000 anthology, resulted in a "Pushcart Prize" for Caribbean Writer.  The award is the "most highly praised literary series in America." This was the second time the publication was awarded this recognition.

The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2006. For specific information about how to make a submission, e-mail qmars@uvi.edu.  Information regarding submissions is also available at the University of the Virgin Islands website.
