11-11-2006

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: A seven-man technical delegation from China was due to arrive in Grenada on Friday to commence preparatory work for the first phase of the Chinese Housing Project.

During phase one of the programme the Chinese will be constructing 536 houses for persons in the vulnerable group across the country. The Chinese are expected to construct a total of 2,000 houses for the people of Grenada.

The team is expected to stay in Grenada for three weeks during which they are going to conduct surveys and all the technical assessments required.

The Chinese will team up with local technical and resource persons from the Ministry of Social Development, ARD, Housing Authority and the Ministry of Works in an effort to provide the best possible settlements.

Sixteen sites have been selected for the Chinese Housing Settlements.

In addition, the project will also cater for dwelling houses to be constructed on private lands for persons who were affected by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily.

It is estimated that approximately 500 families will fall into this category.

According to the Minister responsible for Housing, Yolande Bain Horsford, the Government of Grenada is committed to providing housing for persons affected by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily.

Horsford said “we must thank the people of China since they have been a true friend to Grenada during its darkest hour”.

She added “the relationship between China and Grenada is continuing to blossom and be fruitful”.

Horsford further stated that the Chinese are delivering in a big way and sticking to their promise. According to her, “first it was the National Stadium and now Housing. We are very happy to be affiliated with them; it is proving to be the best thing for the people of Grenada.”
