Major projects expected to get underway in Dominica in 2007

Thursday, November 9, 2006

ROSEAU, Dominica: A number of public and private sector projects are expected to get underway in Dominica in 2007. That commitment was given by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit in his 2006 Independence Day Address.

According to Skerrit, work on the West Coast Road will begin upon completion of the state-of-the-art Chinese-Funded $34 million Windsor Park Sports Stadium. The West Coast Road construction, which will include bypasses in Mahaut and Massacre, is expected to cost in excess of $200 million.

Work is also expected to commence before Independence 2007 on the Soufriere/Scottshead sea defence wall, with the initial funding of $12 million coming from the Government of Venezuela. The $16 million Road Improvement and Maintenance Project (RIMP) are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2007. The Melville Hall to Roseau Road which is being funded by the Agence Francaise de Developpement at a cost of $54 million is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2007. The $76 million Roseau Road Reinstatement project is also expected to begin in 2007.

Work on the second phase of the new Dominica Grammar School will begin next year at a cost of $2.5 million. Actual construction on the $3 million Roosevelt Douglas Primary School will begin in early 2007.

In addition to these projects mentioned by the Prime Minister in his Independence Address, a number of other projects across the country are expected to commence soon. These projects will be financed from the CARICOM Petroleum Fund at a cost of over $22 million.

In addition to the string of major public capital projects set to commence in 2007, Skerrit revealed that three major private sector-led tourism projects would get underway in the North and North-East next year. Mention was made of the multimillion dollar 5-star resort at Woodford Hill, a Hotel Marina in Portsmouth and another project at Hampstead.

In its manifesto for the 2005 General Elections, the Dominica Labour Party said it intended to spend $700 million over the period 2005-2010. However based on the Prime Minister’s Independence Address and other public pronouncements, it is very likely spending in the economy over that period will exceed the $700 million figure.
