West Indies legend Sir Vivian honoured by Antigua-BarbudaSaturday, November 4, 2006by Gary Smith ST JOHN'S, Antigua: Former West Indies captain, Sir Vivian Richards, was elated at being honoured by the Antigua and Barbuda government for hiscontribution to sports after the legend received the Most Exalted Order of National Hero award in his homeland on Wednesday.
Richards, who skippered the Caribbean side between 1985 and 1991, received the country's highest award during the country's observance of its 25th anniversary of independence at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG). The 54-year-old Antiguan, who played 121 Test matches for the West Indies, at an average of 50.23, scored over 8,000 runs in a career polished with 24 centuries, was also honoured to be recognised in the same way as former Prime Minister, Vere Bird Snr. "I'm very happy and privileged," said Richards. "To be alongside him (VC Bird) I'm very honoured. He's a great man.” "I've always felt he left a legacy. I would just like to let Antiguans and Barbudans know that regardless of whatever happened we must remember the things that got us to where we are and he (VC Bird) played a major role in that happening, so to be alongside him I'm very honoured," he added. Meanwhile, former West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) vice-president Clarvis Joseph and cricket coach Taddy Arrindell, also received order of awards for their effects in developing sports in the island. Richards, who is still remembered for his brilliant undefeated knock of 192 against India at Delhi, almost 32 years ago is one of West Indies' greatest ever batsmen and arguably the hardest hitting batsman that ever played the game.
