Grenada House of Representatives passes CWC sunset legislation

Thursday, November 2, 2006

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: Government and Opposition Senators in Grenada will on Friday debate the ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies Bill 2007, the Bill having been passed by the House of Representatives on Monday.

Parliamentarians debated what is termed as the sunset legislation on Monday, allowing it to go through all its stages.

The Opposition NDC, while not opposing to the bill, said once again the government has failed to present enough information on the bill. According to the Opposition MP for St. George North East, as a party that represents the people, they need to get more information that can be used to educate them.

But Minister of Sports, Roland Bhola, says certain issues as to the staging of World Cup will be addressed. One of which is the provisions for residents living within close proximity to where the games will be held.

The government parliamentarians also expressed the view that they are yet to be convinced that the opposition fully supports the staging of World Cup matches in Grenada.

While defending their case, the opposition MPs stated that they support the World Cup and its staging, but, when it comes to decision making and the implementation of laws that could affect the people, more information is needed.

The ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies Bill 2007 contains 7 parts with 59 clauses.
