Cuba backs Bolivia's UN Security Council candidacy

Thursday, October 26, 2006

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AFP): Cuba "has no objections" to Bolivia's candidacy for a rotating seat on the UN Security Council, which becomes avalable in December, Cuban Ambassador Rafael Dausa said here Wednesday.

"For us, it would really be an honour and a pleasure if Bolivia represented Latin America on the Security Council. We believe Bolivia and its government would be able to play a decorous and worthy role in the Security Council," Dausa said.

Cuba and Bolivia are close allies.

Venezuela and Guatemala recommended Bolivia and Costa Rica, respectively, as alternate candidates for the UN Security Council, high-level Venezuelan officials said Wednesday, after the United Nations deadlocked over a choice between them.

Fighting for the UN Security Council seat earmarked for a Latin American or Caribbean nation, Venezuela and Guatemala were unable to break a standoff in 35 rounds of voting last week.
