Curacao cares about the situation in Darfur

Monday, October 16, 2006

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Darfur, Sudan is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, yet many are not expressing their outrage about this situation.

Alex Rosaria

State Secretary of Finance, Alex Rosaria, is of the opinion that Curacao cannot close its eyes anymore and should not assume that Darfur is someone else’s problem. He has therefore initiated a campaign to raise awareness about the dire situation in that part of the world.

“The intention is that people realise what is going on in Darfur and that we include the victims in our collective prayers and meditations. According to him people should become more involved and voice their outrage at the widespread attack against civilians that is taking place,” explained Rosaria.

The local Red Cross Organisation has also joined this initiative and offers the opportunity for those who would like to make a financial contribution, to do so. Special bank accounts have been opened.

Rosaria lived for almost three years in Chad (which borders the Darfur area) while working for the United Nations and feels a strong personal tie with the area.

“Why should anyone in Curacao or in the Caribbean area for that matter care about far-away-from-our-reality Darfur? When the genocide of Darfur is written, when Hollywood has produced movies about it, it does not make any sense to then say, “I wish I had done something to stop the bloodshed,” warned Rosaria.
