PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Officials of the gaming industry in Trinidad and Tobago are preparing to take legal action against a decision by Government to crack down on their operation.

A group met on Thursday to discuss government's budget proposal, which among other things aims to eventually shut down the industry.

In his budget presentation, Prime Minister Patrick Manning, who is also Minister of Finance, said the gaming industry had the potential to destroy family life and disrupt society. He said government was totally against this activity and warned of appropriate legislation to deal with the issue.

Meanwhile, speaking during a press conference, owner of the Ma Pau, one of the island's casinos, Annette Richards said that the group will be seeking legal advice for members and staff.

She said that her association was surprised that no consultation was offered by Government before the budget to help the gaming industry.

Richards said that the local gaming industry was not only a source of job creation but that it regenerated the area, adding that it attracted tourists and investment.

Another casino owner, Charles Sookhan is estimating that between 5,000 and 7,000 people would be affected through the displacement of jobs.

Sookhan also said that the group will be exploring what options could be pursued but he maintained that there was no reason to panic.
