Grenada government hands out cheques to displaced nutmeg workers

Friday, October 6, 2006

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: The Grenada Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday handed out 100 cheques to displaced Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association (GCNA) workers from the parishes of St Patrick’s, St Mark’s and St John’s.

These monies were paid to workers who were employed by the company prior to the year 1999 and lost their jobs due to the devastation inflicted upon the agricultural sector by hurricane Ivan in 2004. The $830,000 allocated by the Government to be paid to these displaced workers is aimed primarily at assisting this very vulnerable group socially and economically through this very trying period.

Minster of Works and Parliamentary Representative for St Mark’s Clarice Modeste-Curwen encouraged the workers to utilize these monies wisely. She stated that this activity is a true manifestation of caring and that Government has created a safety net to financially assist the most vulnerable groups in our society.

“Agriculture is and will be one of the pillars towards economic development in this country and Government intends to do every thing necessary to ensure that the sector thrives,” said Modeste-Curwen, addressing assisted workers in St. Mark’s.

Minister of Agriculture Sen. Adrian Mitchell, who was also present at the ceremony, encouraged workers to be a part of the future development of the agricultural industry in Grenada. The Minister stated that "despite the problems that are presently faced by the agricultural sector if we all make a concerted effort we can find solutions to alleviate the problems faced and rebuild the industry.”

Also present at the ceremony were members from GCNA. The team will be in Grenville on Friday to continue with the distribution.
