Fidel Castro will return to power, says foreign minister

HAVANA, Cuba (AFP): Ailing 80-year-old Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who temporarily ceded power to his brother Raul in July, will return to power, Cuba's top diplomat was quoted as saying in official media Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque said "Comandante Fidel Castro continues to recover" and "we will have him back leading the Revolution," the Cuban Communist Party newspaper Granma said. Perez Roque was not quoted as giving any target date for such a change.

Fidel Castro handed over the reins of power for the first timne in almost five decades to Raul Castro, 75, who long has been Cuba's defense chief, after undergoing intestinal surgery July 27.

Fidel Castro did not take part in public events of the Non-Aligned Movement summit that Cuba hosted in Havana September 11-16, but met with a handful of world leaders. In official photos and video, he was pictured appearing gaunt but in good spirits.
