by Courtney Dentch
USA (Bloomberg), MIAMI: A tropical depression that formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday strengthened to become the ninth storm of the hurricane season, taking the name Isaac, US forecasters said.
Isaac, 635 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, is not considered a threat to land, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 5 pm EDT. It is forecast to head north in the Atlantic, passing about 300 miles east-northeast of Bermuda on September 30 before turning northeast.
It was forecast to near Newfoundland on October 2, the hurricane center said.
The storm, which is not forecast to become a hurricane, is packing winds of 45 miles per hour, the center said. The threshold for a hurricane is sustained winds of 74 mph.
The last four tropical storms in the Atlantic basin -- Ernesto, Florence, Gordon and Helene -- have all become hurricanes.
