PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Infection control measures are being increased at the Tobago Scarborough Hospital, in order to ensure the vigilance of staff and the infection control team.

This revelation came, as officials in Tobago confirmed that bacteria has been found in the hospital's maternity ward.

The action comes following the results of tests recently conducted at the institution, in response to reports that four babies had died, and their deaths were allegedly linked with the presence of harmful bacteria at the health institution.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Chief Executive Officer of the Tobago Regional Health Authority, Myrna Riley-Des Vignes, confirmed that tests were conducted on September 11.

She revealed that no bacteria was identified in 18 areas, but four areas of the maternity ward tested positive.

It was stated that the baby's bath in the pre-natal unit revealed the presence of intero-bacta, while the incubator was also infected .

Sources also revealed that the tap in the patient's toilet in the labour room showed staphylococus and intero-bacta, as well as scant staphylococus.

The authorities at the Scarborough Hospital have since directed that infection control measures be increased .

It was also revealed that there has been intensive steam cleaning to sanitize the more sensitive areas of the hospital. The areas include the geriatric ward, the maternity ward, the dialysis unit, the operating theatre, and the refurbished children's ward.
