Regional zoning conference to be held in BVI

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

ROAD TOWN, BVI: The Town and Country Planning Department in the British Virgin Islands will be hosting a two-day regional conference on zoning as part of its observance of World Town Planning Day in November.

Chief Planner Louis Potter said it is part of the Territory's three-day celebration, from November 8-10.

"We are hosting a forum on zoning as a tool in community planning," the chief planner announced, adding that focus would also be placed on the 25th anniversary of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

As part of this year's activities, Potter noted, there will be a forum for local and regional professionals to brainstorm ideas in physical planning methods.

"The Town and Country Planning Department will also present the territorial zoning plan and the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process to spur discussions by representatives from other OECS member states," Potter said.

He said activities will also include a tour of Beef Island, where the EIA process is being used to manage the environmental impact of a major resort development.

In recognition of World Town Planning Day the chief planner is inviting urban and regional planners, government officials and professionals, architects, contractors, and persons who work in professions related to physical planning to make submissions for the upcoming two-day workshop entitled "Zoning as a Tool in Community Planning".

He said the Town and Country Planning Department is inviting local and regional professionals in related fields to submit papers for inclusion on the programme during the upcoming forum on zoning and other town planning issues.

"Participants will contribute to the review of zoning specifications based on problems and issues in physical development within the Caribbean region through the presentation of papers, theories, and discussions on different topics related to zoning, environmental impact, and disaster mitigation," the chief planner said.

Potter added that submissions are being invited for consideration by a workshop programme committee, which includes internal and external planning professionals. He said the committee will organise an educational programme based upon the submissions received.

The World Town Planning Day workshop will be held November 8-9 at the Learning Resource Centre at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College. World Town Planning Day is celebrated in 30 countries on four continents on November 8 each year. This is the fourth year that the BVI is participating in the global observance, which was introduced in 1949.
