PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: A proposal towards the establishment of a bi-lateral investment treaty between Trinidad and Tobago, and the Republic of Ireland, was one of the major issues to emerge from recent discussions between this country's Trade and Industry Minister, Kenneth Valley, and the Irish Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern.
Minister Valley is heading a T&T trade mission to Europe, which includes Ambassador Pleni-potentiary and Extra-ordiniare Jerry Narace, High Commissioner in London Glenda Morean-Phillip, as well as officers from both the Trade and Industry, and Foreign Affairs ministries.
Ireland was the first stop for the Mission, which is also to hold talks with government officials in London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris and Madrid.
The objective is to promote Trinidad and Tobago as the best place for business and investment in the region, with particular emphasis on the non-energy sector.
In addition to the proposed bi-lateral investment treaty, Trinidad's Trade Minister, Kenneth Valley and Prime Minister Ahern agreed in principle to an Irish Trade Mission, consisting of technocrats and business people, visiting Trinidad and Tobago next January.
They also agreed to fast-track the establishment of stronger diplomatic relations between Ireland and Trinidad and Tobago.
