Haitian militants hand over weapons
09-13-2006
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (UPI): Haitian gang members handed over weapons to U.N. peacekeepers to kick off a U.N. effort to disarm the militant movement, Haitian radio reported Tuesday.
Brazilian peacekeepers, leading the United Nations operation in Haiti, received a machine gun and two handguns in a ceremony from three militants to initiate the handover, which hopes to eventually disarm up to 1,000 Haitians that remain loyal to former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Aristide left Haiti in February 2004 amid an armed uprising from rebels calling for his resignation.
