Suriname qualify for next phase of Digicel Caribbean Cup
Monday, September 11, 2006
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: Suriname defeated Netherlands Antilles at the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Curacao on Sunday to ensure their progression to the next phase of the Digicel Caribbean Cup at the expense of the home side.
An exciting and even first half saw the teams separated only by Orlando Grootfaam’s early goal, a fine right footed finish from inside the penalty area after an excellent dribble from Cliften Sandvliet who glided past 3 players before setting Grootfaam up for an easy finish. Suriname nearly extended their lead when Sandvliet struck the crossbar after Pisas had failed to hold a cross from the right.
But the large and noisy home crowd was soon on its feet when play switched to the other end and Shayron Bernardus’s long range effort cannoned off the Suriname bar.
The second half was a cagey affair with few clear cut chances, the contingent of Suriname fans in the crowd becoming increasingly vocal as the second half progressed.
Despite the lion’s share of possession in the closing minutes, the home side were unable to convert the few chances they created, Suriname hanging on for the victory that gave them second place in the final Group A table and assured qualification for the next phase.
