Cruise passengers need passports in 2007
Saturday, September 9, 2006
NEW YORK, USA (UPI): The US travel industry says tougher border procedures for US citizens and foreign travelers could put a squeeze on cruise passengers.
The Wall Street Journal says passports will be required starting next year for most everyone entering the United States from the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico through airports and seaports. Land borders will adopt the same requirement in 2008.
The newspaper said the travel industry and some border-state lawmakers worry that the new procedures will cause "confusion and long delays." Only 25 percent of Americans currently have passports.
The US State Department's head passport official says people traveling to the Caribbean this winter need to start worrying about a passport this fall, the newspaper reported.
