LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Cadogan's square pegs

Friday, September 8, 2006

Dear Sir:

I'm in basic agreement with Carson Cadogan's opinion regarding Bush and the infamous secret prisons in Europe. I think, however, that he is too charitable towards the Democrats and the European countries as well.

Europe alone has a lot to answer for given its own colonial past and its complicity in some of the most horrific atrocities in Asia and Africa right up to the present day. A study of the Zimbabwe Liberation War alone is a lesson in cruelty by way of mercenary operations, and politicking to shore up support for the murderous regime of Ian Smith.

For me, as a student of history and a resident in the Caribbean, the only difference between the Republicans and the Democrats is the way in which they strive to impose Euro-American power and influence upon others. What I 'like' about George Bush Jnr is that at least he is open about what he does, but was Clinton any different? Would Kerry have been any different (no matter how hard I try I can't shake the fact that his wife is Rhodesian and what that could imply)? It's the same khaki pants.

We in the Caribbean need to dispense with simplistic binary 'either/or' interpretations of issues. The only difference between those two main parties in the US is in methodology. Numerous covert renditions and operations took place under the Clinton administration. Further, it really doesn't matter who occupies the White House, US foreign policy is guided and has always been guided by the economic interests of its corporate elite.
