Court bailiffs enhance skills in the BVI
09-02-2006
ROAD TOWN, BVI: Court bailiffs from five Caribbean countries and territories enhanced their skills at a one-day workshop hosted by the British Virgin Islands High Court Registry this week.
Thirteen bailiffs from Antigua, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands took part in the workshop, which was conducted by two experienced trainers from the Jamaican Justice Training Institute.
High Court Registrar Sonya Young said the training was geared at improving competencies of both High Court and Magistrate’s Court bailiffs.
“Our objective was to enable them to better perform their duties and ultimately improve the administration of justice,” Young said.
The workshop reviewed bailiffs’ legal obligations with special emphasis on enforcing judgement collecting and accounting for creditors’ money as well as bookkeeping. Bailiffs also discussed protocol and decorum, audit, reporting procedures, and supervision of assistant or junior bailiffs.
Resident judge in the BVI Justice Indra Charles briefly welcomed the bailiffs at the start of the day-long workshop, while Deputy Governor Dancia Penn, Q.C., handed out certificates of completion to participants at the conclusion.
