Saturday, September 2, 2006
ROAD TOWN, BVI: A three-member delegation from the British Virgin Islands led by Speaker of the House Inez Archibald is attending the 52nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Nigeria from September 1-10.
Archibald is joined by Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Eileene Parsons and Clerk of Legislative Council Alva McCall.
The theme of the conference is “Enhancing Standards of Democratic Governance and Public Perceptions of Parliament in the Commonwealth.”
More than 300 members of more than 170 Commonwealth parliaments and legislatures are expected to attend the conference.
Delegates will discuss issues as strategies to deal with the HIV/AIDS pandemic, policies on climate change, and measures to curb violence and threats to security at both domestic and international levels.
Representatives from nations, states and territories with populations of under 400,000 will meet at the 26th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference of Members from Small Countries, a sub-group of the larger conference.
The agenda for the small countries meeting will focus on security issues, such as border control, illegal migration, crime prevention and gang-related violence.
The BVI delegation is expected to return to the territory on September 12.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference is part of the programme of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) to enhance the ability of parliamentarians to contribute to good governance and development.
The CPA was formed in 1911 as the Empire Parliamentary Association. Its mission is to promote the advancement of parliamentary democracy by enhancing knowledge and understanding of democratic governance.
