PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago: The Prisons Association in Trinidad has called for the authorities to deal with outstanding issues affecting officers, which it believes contribute to disorder at the nation's prisons.

Rioting among inmates broke out on Wednesday morning at the Golden Grove state Prison in Arouca east Trinidad. This is said to be one in a series of similar incidents that have been occurring in recent months.

Prison Association's Public Relations Officer, Rajkumar Ramroop, speaking in a telephone interview, said the uprising began as prison officers were in the process of searching cells for illegal items.

He said the inmates became upset by what was simply a routine procedure. They then proceeded to break the lighting fixtures in their cell blocks using discarded newspaper, which eventfully caught fire. The prisoners then threatened to burn down the prison.

Ramroop said this has resulted in a lock down of the Prison facility.

He says the Association wants the National Security Minister Martin Joseph to address their concerns regarding prison officer safety.

Since Wednesday's prison riot all is said to be now calm at the island's state prison.
