Guyana elections results to be declared WednesdayWednesday, August 30, 2006by Gordon French GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has assured that it is working "around the clock" to ensure that the declaration of results is made sometime Wednesday. Thousands of Guyanese turned out early to cast their votes on Monday, which has been confirmed as incident free but the lowest voter turnout since the CARICOM member-country gained its independence from the British in 1966. Chief Elections Officer Googol Boodoo told the media and election observer groups Tuesday evening during an update, that the Commission will not be pressured to release results. "The Commission is well aware of the anxiety created after the elections and have been doing everything possible. We are not going to be rushed or pressured by anyone to come out and make statements which we are going to be regretting after," Boodoo said. He noted that the Commission is doing all that is necessary and up to midnight Tuesday night were in possession of results from almost every district. Boodoo noted that, by early Monday, some 60 percent of the results would have been known. "We have faith and we live in hope. We are processing," Boodoo promised.
