PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: A recent survey conducted in Trinidad and Tobago has revealed that the use of alcohol and illicit drugs among students in public schools is on the rise.
Manager of Student Support Services at the Ministry of Education, Steve Williams made the revelation on Tuesday during a news conference.
Williams told reporters that a recent survey shows that there was now a major problem in schools as result of the finding.
The problem was said to be quite prominent especially in secondary schools. Williams said however that the Ministry of Education continues to put measures in place to deal with the situation, ensuring a drug free and a smoke free environment.
He added that the Ministry had developed a master plan that will be implemented over the next few years.
Incidents of violence however had been on the decline at many of the nation's schools. This was revealed by another education ministry official.
