New public transportation policy for the BVI
08-29-2006
TORTOLA, BVI: The public in the British Virgin Islands is being asked to comment on a draft public transportation policy that would introduce a new class of license plates for hired vehicles not operating as a taxi.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works John Samuel said the public’s input in the process is important and every effort will be made to encourage public involvement.
“Our goal is to introduce the draft policy as a basis for discussion and further development. We are hoping for clear concise thoughts, issues and suggestions from the public to fine-tune the policy’s content to improve the industry,” Samuel said.
The proposed document seeks to introduce the “HI” plate for shuttle buses, tour buses, limousines or any other vehicle designed and operated for hire, but not as a taxi. Hired vehicles would be prohibited from accepting any form of payment directly from passengers.
Under the proposed policy, vehicles operating as a taxi will be required to operate or be dispatched from a base or station and companies holding trade licenses for hire or for taxi would be limited in their operation to a total of six vehicles under either type of licenses.
Among the initiatives undertaken by government to have the public's input is a panel discussion this week with officials from the Ministry of Communications and Works, BVI Tourist Board, BVI Taxi Commission, Attorney General’s Chambers and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.
