PARAMARIBO, Suriname: The Surinamese government, with national institutions and assistance of the international community, is prepared to accommodate Guyanese nationals fleeing possible violence in connection with the elections on August 28.
Speaking to local journalists at the Presidential Palace Thursday president Ronald Venetiaan said, however, that appropriate measures will be taken against criminals who are on the run from Guyanese police and try to enter Suriname.
His government is keeping an eye on the developments in the neighboring country.
Venetiaan said, “We are watching the developments due to our interest of what is happening in that country. Unrest in Guyana could disrupt the regular relations with that country”.
He further stressed that if large numbers of refugees flee to Suriname, this will certainly create problems for the country. His government is, however, prepared to deal with that.
Responding to questions from reporters, Venetiaan stated that he has not had any consultation with Guyana president Bharrat Jagdeo about the current situation.
According to Venetiaan, Suriname, along with other countries in the region and the rest of the world, is striving after peaceful development, and it is therefore watching “how Guyana will survive this period.”
The Head of Government hopes that the elections on Monday will pass peacefully.
