BVI teachers prepare for new school yearMonday, August 21, 2006ROAD TOWN, BVI: Teachers in the British Virgin Islands begin a four-day summer institute on Monday aimed at improving classroom instruction in preparation for the new school year. Organised by the Department of Education and Culture, the institute will be held at the BVI High School from Monday until Thursday under the theme “Facing Changes and Challenges in Education”. This year the institute will offer a series of seminars targeting different disciplines within the education system. Chief Education Officer Angel Smith said that one of the aims is to introduce teachers to strategies and methodology, which can be used in the classroom. Smith says this year’s summer institute will give the participants the necessary tools to improve classroom instructions and delivery. He says that at the secondary level, teachers will focus on their individual disciplines while the primary school teachers will cover issues relating to Literacy Development, Language Arts and Mathematics. The professional development sessions target principals and teachers of both private and public schools. Principals will participate in seminars on Leadership, Obesity and the Schools Administrative Student Information (SASI) software. Presentations will be made by a number of local facilitators. The objective of the summer institute is to provide a forum where educators can exchange ideas and experiences and gain insights into innovative trends in education. Minister of Education Lloyd Black and the Chief Education Officer will address teachers at Monday’s opening ceremony scheduled to begin at 9am. The Department of Education and Culture organises forums of this kind to allow educators to strengthen relationships among educators at public and private schools in the Territory, as well as within all levels of the Department.
