ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: The Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) has awarded 39 academic scholarships and professional development grants, totaling a record amount of US$144,500, to talented Caribbean students who work in the hotel and tourism sector, through the Caribbean Hotel Foundation (CHF) - the largest scholarship program in the Caribbean hospitality industry and one of the top programs in the industry worldwide.
The total funds awarded represents a 14% percent increase over 2005 ($126,000). The increase was possible partly through the generous contribution of private sector sponsors, including Virgin Holidays, Interval International, The Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), Royal Caribbean, and Carnival Cruise Lines.
In addition, the Foundation raised $80,700 through the annual live and silent auctions, held during the Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC 2006) in Miami, Florida, last June.
Lyndeon George and Lynthia Modeste are the two Caribbean Hotel Foundation scholarship recipients from Grenada.
Lyndeon was granted a US$2,000 scholarship to study an Associate Degree in Hospitality Studies from the Barbados Community College, while Lynthia will be working towards a degree in Hospitality Management, also with a US$2,000 grant, at the Barbados Community College.
Both Lyndeon and Lynthia have experience in Grenadian tourism industry acquired at the Calabash Hotel and Mariposa Beach Resort, respectively.
Gill Titcombe, CHF Coordinator explained that “the goal of the Foundation is to contribute to the professional development of the Caribbean workforce, thus playing a part in the creation of new career opportunities for talented Caribbean nationals, as well as the long-term improvement of the Caribbean tourism industry’s standards and overall product."
"I am thrilled that in 2006, we have succeeded in widening our geographic reach and awarding more scholarships than ever before.”
Every year, CHF offers academic scholarships to students who demonstrate a strong commitment to the hotel and tourism industry and the potential for future success. Scholarships for professional development; for CCHT seminars; further education grants for teachers; and journalism scholarships are also available.
