PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: At least one labour union is gearing up for a long fight with the Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago.

On Tuesday the Communication Workers Union which represents hundreds of permanent employees reported that some 345 of TSTT's staff are set to be retrenched.

In a statement, the union says the resolution is a part of the telephone company document called "surplus headcount 2006/2007".

The union says the key areas targeted are where contract labour has made significant in-roads over the years.

In addition, it says TSTT plans to replace its entire permanent workforce with contract labour for the sole purpose of lowering its operating costs.

The union also says it is fully aware that TSTT has recorded increased profits since the introduction of competition in the telecommunications sector.

The union says it has no intention of succumbing to TSTT's intimidatory tactics and therefore during its negotiations with the company it will fight to secure workers benefits and entitlements.
