PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Passengers now traveling through Trinidad's Piarco International Airport are now subject to tighter security regulations.

The new regulations went into effect on Thursday immediately following the discovery of a plot to blow up aircraft enroute from the UK to the US. Trinidad on Wednesday had at least one flight which left Piarco for London, but it was confirmed that all passengers and crew were safe.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Customs and Excise Division are now conducting inspections of all items allowed by airlines as carry-on or hand-held baggage.

Passengers have also been warned to expect some delays and discomfort as the Airports Authority moves to bring greater safety to travelers.

There will also be similar action at the Tobago Crown Point Airport. It is not clear how long this heightened level of security will stay in effect at both airports.
